Brynjarsdottir strike sends West Ham into last four

Dagny Brynjarsdottir has scored five goals in 12 league games for West Ham this season

West Ham captain Dagny Brynjarsdottir scored a late winner against Liverpool to seal her side’s place in the Continental League Cup semi-finals.

Brynjarsdottir headed in a superb curling ball from Viviane Asseyi in the 87th minute at Prenton Park.

Liverpool had earlier had a goal ruled out when Katie Stengel was flagged offside after chipping into the net.

The Reds had the better chances in the second half before West Ham grabbed victory in the closing stages.

Stengel, Liverpool’s top scorer in the Women’s Super League this season, was their biggest threat, but denied by visiting goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Asseyi also came close for West Ham, while defender Kate Longhurst had an effort pushed behind by Reds goalkeeper Faye Kirby.

The draw for the semi-final takes place on Thursday, 26 January at 16:30 GMT.
