Mathieu Debuchy is a French footballer who now plays for the Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne as well as making frequent appearances for the France national team. He can play as a deep-lying playmaker in addition to being a notable right back.

He began his professional football career with Lille in Ligue 1. In the 2010-11 season, he won the French double of Ligue 1 and Coupe de France with them. After ten seasons with Lille, he went to Newcastle United in the Premier League.

He joined Arsenal in 2014 after spending 18 months at St James’ Park. He then became a regular starter for the Gunners until 2016, when he was loaned to Bordeaux.

Debuchy lasted for a few months, making nine games before returning to Arsenal. He made his debut for the French national team in 2011 and has since played in over 30 games for them.


Debuchy began his football career in 1992, at the age of seven, with the youth programme of his hometown club, Frétin. At the juvenile age of eight, he joined the Lille Academy after a single season of training.

Between 1993 and 2003, he went through a tough training programme at the club. During that time, Debuchy has played for the club’s youth teams on multiple occasions. During the 2003–04 season’s winter break, he grabbed the attention of first-team officials.

On July 17, 2014, Debuchy signed a long-term contract with Arsenal, one of the English Premier League champions. Newcastle has allegedly been paid roughly €14 million to get him on board.

Upon his arrival at the club, he was given the ‘Number 2′ shirt. On the 10th of August 2014, he made his Arsenal debut in the FA Community Shield match against Manchester City.

On August 27, 2014, Debuchy made his European competitive debut against Beşiktaş in a UEFA Champions League play-off match. On December 21, 2014, he scored his first goal for the club against Liverpool.

Debuchy joined AS Saint-Étienne of the French Ligue 1 on January 31, 2018. On February 2, 2018, he made his competitive debut for the club against Amiens SC. He also scored his first goal in his first match, which is interesting. On February 25, 2018, he scored his first Derby du Rhône goal against Olympique Lyonnais.


Debuchy won the French Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France with Lille in the 2010–11 season. He won the FA Community Shield twice in a row with Arsenal in 2014 and 2015. He has a number of awards to his name in addition to his team’s accomplishments. The following are some of the most noteworthy individual accolades he has earned to date:
