NZ vs ENG: Tim Southee Equals MS Dhoni’s Remarkable Test Batting Record, Closing In On Viv Richards And Kevin Pietersen

New Zealand skipper Tim Southee is one of the finest fast bowlers the nation has ever produced but during Day 2 of their second Test against England, he ended up exceeding a batting record held by former India captain MS Dhoni.

Southee is recognized as a useful big hitter in the lower order, and he struck two sixes on Saturday to remain unbeaten on 23 off 18 balls.

This brought his total for his Test cricket career to 78, placing him on par with Dhoni and just behind players like Kevin Pietersen and Matthew Hayden. In fact, Southee will eclipse West Indies legend Viv Richards’ record if he knocks six more maximums.

Dhoni played 90 Test matches until abruptly ending his career during India’s tour of Australia in 2014. During that time, he amassed 4876 runs at an average of 38.09, with six centuries, 33 half-centuries, and a top score of 224. Tim Southee, on the other side, has amassed 1898 runs at an average of 15.94, with five half-centuries and a top score of 77 not out. Of the top 15 all-time highest six-hitters in Test cricket, Tim Southee is the only player with an average under 20, with all others having played at one point as batters or all-rounders.

Tim Southee became the first New Zealand bowler to reach 700 international wickets:

In the first Test of the two-game series, Stokes surpassed McCullum’s record of 107 sixes by reaching 109. With 87 sixes, veteran all-rounder Chris Cairns ranks between Southee and McCullum as the third-highest six-hitter among New Zealand batsmen in Test cricket.

On Day 2 of the second Test, Tim Southee became the first New Zealand bowler to surpass 700 international wickets. His squad, on the other hand, continued to struggle, being reduced to 138/7 after England declared 435/8 in their first innings. The hosts had lost the opening Test by a massive 267 runs against a surging England, which had won 10 of their previous 11 matches since Stokes took over as Test captain.
