Philippe Mexès is a centre defender for the Italian Serie A club Milan and the French national team. At the age of 12, Mexès began his youth career in Auxerre. He began his training at Bastille, the youth team, where he soon established himself as one of the main players for younger sides, leading them to several cup victories. He won the 2003 Coupe de France with the senior team. Roma signed Mexès to a four-year contract in June 2004. On September 12, 2004, Mexès made his Serie A debut against Fiorentina. In UEFA Cup action, Mexès appeared in nine of Roma’s 10 games.

He also appeared in the Coppa Italia final in 2005–06. The club advanced to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Mexès agreed to a new five-year deal at €4.5 million in the first year, rising to €5 million in the final year. Mexès scored the first goal for Roma in the 2008 Coppa Italia Final, and the Giallorossi went on to win 2–1 and retain their championship. Philippe Mexès will play for Milan starting next season, according to Milan CEO Adriano Galliani.

On October 26, 2011, he made his Serie A debut for Milan, winning 4–1 against Parma at home. On November 21, 2012, in a Champions League group encounter against RSC Anderlecht, he scored his first goal for A.C. Milan with a fantastic bicycle kick from 20 metres.
