Raphael Varane is a French footballer who currently plays for Real Madrid in La Liga and for the national team of France. The centre-back, who was born in Lille on April 25, 1993, possesses all of the characteristics of a perfect defender.

The Frenchman, who possesses incredible physical power and speed, is a master at bringing the ball out of the back. After providing superb defensive performances at barely 24 years old, the prodigy has solidified his spot alongside Sergio Ramos at the heart of Real’s defence.

Early days

Varane began his football career at the age of seven, when he joined the local team AS Hellemmes. He began training with professional team RC Lens two years later and swiftly rose through the club’s youth systems. He played for the squad at both the U16 and U19 levels, winning the Championnat National des 16 ans with the former squad in the 2008-2009 season.

Varane was called up to the U18 squad in 2010, and he made his debut against Denmark, scoring a goal. He was called up for the U21 team in 2011, and his goal in a 2-0 win against Slovakia in the 2013 Euro U-21 Qualifiers sealed France’s qualification to the competition’s playoffs.


Varane made his professional debut for Lens against Montpellier in the 2010-2011 season, when he played the entire 90 minutes in a 2-0 win. Varane moved fast through the ranks and immediately established himself as a regular starter for the club. In 2011, he was even named captain of the squad in a match against Arles-Avignon, which is a significant achievement for someone so young. Varane was called up to the French national team for a friendly against Uruguay in 2012, however he did not participate. Varane made his first appearance for France in a World Cup qualification against Georgia in 2013. His outstanding international performance earned him a spot in the France team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Rise to Glory

Varane signed a six-year deal with Real Madrid for a rumoured value of about ten million euros after Lens was relegated to Ligue 2 in 2011. Varane’s attempt to push his way into the first team at 19 years old and with little experience was always going to be challenging. He had to wait a few months to make his La Liga debut, which he did in September 2011 against Racing Santander.

Varane scored his first goal for Madrid three days later against Rayo Vallecano, making him the club’s youngest foreign goal scorer.

Since then, the Frenchman’s road has only been upward. In the 2012-2013 season, he achieved even another milestone when he scored a spectacular equaliser in a Copa del Ray encounter against Barcelona. He became the second-youngest foreign player to score in a Clasico with the goal. Varane scored yet another spectacular goal in the game’s second leg.Varane has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world today, having won La Liga twice, the Copa del Ray once, and the Champions League three times with Real. He is an essential addition to the squad because of his outstanding tackles, precise interceptions, and ability to launch assaults from the back.
