Scholes makes fresh Man Utd PL title prediction; Garnacho slammed for dig at Barcelona star

Paul Scholes thinks Man Utd are “in with a chance” of winning the Premier League title with the Carabao Cup final crucial to their momentum.

The Red Devils beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate on Thursday night to move into the last 16 of the Europa League and Erik ten Hag’s side can now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday.

Man Utd could be on for an incredible end to the season with glory in the FA Cup, Premier League, Carabao Cup and Europa League still possible.

And Scholes thinks victory on Sunday against the Magpies would take “a little bit of the pressure off” for the rest of the season.

Scholes said on BT Sport: “Of course it’s good to go in [to Sunday’s final] with the momentum of beating a good team like Barca, a top-class club with the history they have.

“It was important going into Sunday. But there’s not just Sunday. Sunday is a massive game for silverware, it’s something this club need.

“It will take a little bit of pressure off [Erik ten Hag] and the team. Every game between now and the end of the season is going to be big.

“I’m still not going to rule them out of the title race. I know people will say they’re a little bit too far away.

“A lot of people say Manchester City are going to win the league. What are [United], two, three points behind Manchester City?

“So I still think they’re in with a chance, with this momentum. The only thing I think that might hurt them is the amount of games.

“They’ve got the League Cup final on Sunday, the FA Cup in midweek, Liverpool away the week after.

“There are some tough games, but on the other hand they’ve played Arsenal twice, they’ve played Manchester City twice, and I still think they’re in a half-decent position to go for the league.”

Alejandro Garnacho caused Barcelona problems when he came off the bench as a second-half substitute in their victory over the Catalan giants on Thursday night.

But the Argentina youth international angered Barcelona supporters in the aftermath of the match by copying Pedri’s goal celebration and posting it on Instagram with the caption: “The big team advanced to the next round”.

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo took particular offence, commenting: ‘A gesture in very poor taste for an 18-year-old boy who hasn’t been in elite football for very long.’
