Simon Luc Hildebert Mignolet was born on March 6, 1988, in Sint-Truiden, Belgium. Simon is a Belgian goalkeeper who now plays for Premier League club Liverpool and the Belgium national team.

Mignolet has been a member of the Belgian national team at every level since he was 16 years old.

Background

After the departure of Dusan Belic in 2006, Mignolet joined his hometown football team, Belgian Second Division club Sint-Truiden, and rose through their junior system to become their first-choice goalkeeper, making 100 senior league games and scoring a goal.

He helped Sint-Truiden win the Belgian Second Division in 2009, making 29 games and scoring a penalty, and was voted Belgian Goalkeeper of the Year the following year after helping Sint-Truiden avoid relegation.

Mignolet began his professional career in 2004 with Belgian Second Division team Sint-Truiden, where he played six years.

In June 2010, he went to Sunderland for £2 million, where he spent three years and made 101 appearances in all competitions before joining Liverpool for £9 million in June 2013.

Debut

After a fine run of form for Sunderland, Mignolet was called up to the Belgian senior team on September 1st 2010, and after a few months, he made his full international debut in a 2–0 victory against Austria in a UEFA Euro 2012 qualification match.

For a while, he was in the starting lineup, but after the match against England in the 2011–12 season, he did not play an international match for four months, with Thibaut Courtois being favoured instead, and Mignolet serving as the backup goalkeeper.

Club career

After being asked for a training facility visit, Mignolet signed a five-year contract with English Premier League team Sunderland for £2 million on June 17, 2010. Mignolet made his Sunderland debut in a 2–2 draw against Birmingham City a few months later, and was awarded man of the match for his efforts. Mignolet solidified his status as Sunderland’s first-choice goalkeeper by appearing in every game of the season, maintaining a huge amount of clean sheets and earning multiple man of the match awards. Mignolet, one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, signed a five-year contract with Liverpool on June 25, 2013, for a reported sum of £9 million.
