Thomas Vermaelen is a Belgian footballer who now represents Arsenal F.C. and the Belgian national team. He mainly plays as a left-sided centre defender, though he can also play as a left-back. He presently serves as Arsenal’s captain. He began his career at Germinal Ekeren in his own country before moving on to the Ajax junior system in the Netherlands. On February 15, 2004, he made his professional debut in a 2–0 away win against Volendam. For the 2004–05 season, he was loaned to RKC Waalwijk, where he made thirteen appearances and scored three goals. On June 19, 2009, Vermaelen signed a four-year contract with Arsenal after joining from Ajax for an initial price of €10 million.Vermaelen made his Premier League debut in a 6–1 away win over Everton on August 15, 2009, scoring in the 37th minute. Arsenal supporters chose him as their player of the month on twice in a row, and dubbed him the ‘Verminator.’ Vermaelen began his debut UEFA Champions League match against Olympique de Marseille and was instrumental in the Gunners’ clean sheet.Vermaelen was named Arsenal’s new captain in August 2012, following the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. Aerial ability, leadership abilities, and quickness with the ball at his feet are among of his best qualities. As a defender, he is also noted for his goal-scoring abilities.
