Javier Adelmar Zanetti is an Argentine footballer who now represents Inter Milan in Serie A. He is known for his versatility, as he can play on both the left and right side, having previously played as a fullback and a winger on both wings. Javier Zanetti has been a member of Inter since 1995, and he was named captain on August 29, 1999. He is used as a right defender for the national team, although he can readily transition between defence and offence. Zanetti has led Inter to five Serie A titles and has acquired the nickname “Il Capitano” (The Captain) among fans and the media since taking over as captain. He holds the record for the most all-time appearances by a non-Italian born player for an Italian team, with 757 official matches for Inter. Zanetti’s 700th game with Inter was the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final on May 22, 2010, and the team’s triumph meant that Zanetti commemorated the event by completing a historic treble. He also became the oldest player to score in the UEFA Champions League when he scored against Tottenham Hotspur on October 20, 2010. He is the most capped player in the history of the Argentine national team, having been in the 1996 Olympic tournament as well as two World Cups (1998 and 2002). FIFA designated him an ambassador for the SOS Children’s Villages project in Argentina, and the Milantownhall awarded him the Ambrogino d’Oro award for his humanitarian initiative in 2005.
